About: Christi Academy’s mission is to reach, and teach, the special needs students of Broward County. Utilizing specialized curriculum developed by founder Nancy C. Hellwege, Ed. S., Sunshine State Standards are maintained while finding the best way to teach your child. Small teacher-to-student ratios, hands-on learning, and technology are used to help students understand and apply the necessary concepts required to graduate and succeed in today’s fast-paced society. In public schools where so many vital extras such as music and P.E. are being removed, Christi Academy makes these and other specials a part the regular program. Established in 2000. Established in 2000, Christi Academy was a vision 30 years in the making by founder by Nancy C. Hellwege, Ed. S. Nancy’s own daughter, Christie, was a special needs child in the 60’s and 70’s when special programs did not exist to help these students. Barely graduating and getting in one year of college, Christie ended up waitressing and tending bar while raising 3 children. Christie eventually went back to school in her 30’s, obtaining a certificate in engineering and securing a job with Motorola. Motorola was sending Christie to college when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Sadly, Christie passed away in 1996. Nancy’s mission was to open a school to “help the Christie’s of the world, while honoring Christ and his message”. In the school’s eleven year history, methods and programs have been streamlined to present an overall school that keeps the student’s the number one priority.
